What happened
California won at Syracuse 21-18, moved to 1-1, and somehow the mood barely budged, 68 to 66, which is less a recovery than a plateau. The turning point was the trip itself: a cross-country flight to a conference opponent nobody asked for, settled by three points. One fan summarized the arrangement as "this conference sucks if you're not a sicko." Another, surveying the evening more gently, offered that "we were both unworthy of each other."
