A 13-point win that felt like a warning, with Atkinson carving them up and the playoff talk quietly shelved.
What happened
Houston opened 1-0 with a 33-20 win over Oregon State, and the fanbase celebrated the way one celebrates a passing dental exam. The turning point wasn't a play so much as a realization: Cougar fans watched Atkinson carve up the secondary and quietly filed the Big 12 championship talk away for later. "I'll take a good dub but whew that QB Atkinson absolutely pieced us up," one wrote. Another admitted being "disappointed" after a victory. September honesty is a cruel thing.
