What happened
Preseason hockey returned and so did the familiar one-goal squirm: 2-3 to Montreal, a 2-1 win over the Islanders on the back half of a back-to-back, then 2-3 to Ottawa. The mood stayed oddly warm throughout, propped up by newcomer Marchenko, by Nylander, and by Cowan's "rat energy," with one fan insisting this group is "100x better than last year's team." The turn came against Ottawa, where "Stuzle fucking dive costs them the game." Three games in, and the officiating grievance is already fully operational.
