What happened
The opener in Detroit went 113-121, and the verdict came down fast: "INEXCUSABLE COACHING!!!! Tatum, AWFUL!!!!" One game into the season, someone had already concluded there was "no hope of ever winning a ring with this core again." Three days later the Knicks came to town and left with a 107-103 loss, the turning point being simply that Boston held on. The refs still caught strays. Then the pivot: "Hope everyone enjoyed their 3 days of pretending Tatum's career was over." At 1-1, the funeral has been postponed, not cancelled.
