What happened
Illinois went to Columbus and came home 2-2, flattened 42-19 by Ohio State. The turning point wasn't a play so much as a person: Jeremiah Smith, who, as one fan noted, was "single handedly winning this game" while the rest of the Buckeye offense idled. That detail stung more than the margin. Illinois fans didn't need the scoreboard to tell them what they already suspected, chanting "ASS DEFENSE AS USUAL" into the void. Misery climbed from 59 to 71. September was supposed to be the easy part.
